DCP Cost of Ownership Reduction Solution

Increased IT infrastructure operation performance, lower total cost of ownership and fast return of investment are the main and the most important issues of the list of IT director tasks.

After 2008 crisis companies started active search of ways to cut expenses and increase operational performance. Optimization of in-house IT infrastructure, first of all DPC infrastructure, is one of the most important issues in the process.

Open Technologies offers in-house development applied both to construct new DPC and update the existing one. Offered solution allows reduction of the DPC cost of ownership and guarantee efficient use and control of resources and possibility of fast response to business requirements and its continuity.

Below there are three main technologies listed comprising innovation solution.

  • Input/output consolidation at the access level (unified fabric)

The main idea of input-output consolidation is unification of different DPC transport technologies (such as LAN, SAN technologies) and transmission of various traffic types above the unified convergent infrastructure.

  • Server infrastructure virtualization

This solution allows flexible control of virtual resources and ensures a wide range of functions, such as transition of virtual engines from one physical server to another one, fail-safety assurance, assurance of continuous availability and safety, dynamic redistribution of resources and control of application performance.

  • Data storage and protection in virtualized environments

Unique combination of flexible hardware architecture and brand new software possibilities of disc arrays and software supporting deduplication allows solving difficult and various tasks of enterprises. Technological compatibility of products comprising complex solution and their efficiency are tested by Open Technologies in in-house Competency Center at the specially created demo-stand.

Open technologies specialists analyzed the economic effect of proposed solution using corporate methods of Cisco, EMC and VMware and estimated that TCO of the proposed infrastructure solution is significantly less than that of the conventional DPC structure when one physical server is dedicatedfor one or two applications, LAN and SAN networks and intercluster interaction network are created, etc.

Reduction of the cost of ownership is achieved due to:

  • resource consolidation and virtualization;
  • transport platform unification;
  • reduction of the number of necessary devices and backup copy volumes and, consequently, reduced energy consumption and DCP heat emission.

Example of economical impact:

To imagine to what extent the IT infrastructure cost of ownership can be reduced if DPC is constructed with innovative technology let's consider the following example. Let's take some company where various applications are used located at 150 servers and using total stored data volume about 50 Tb.

Using solution proposed by Open Technologies the company can reduce the number of servers by 8 times, port capacity required - by 20 times, number of switches - by 12 times, energy consumption - by 5 times and heat emission - by 7 times. At this, required rack space will be 8 times less and equipment will weight 8 times less (thus reducing false floor load).

Corresponding investment into DPC construction and further operation costs will be 2 times less, which is in numbers amounts to about 3,800,000 US dollars in 3 years or about 57% saving.

We shall mention that as far as the real final numbers depend on number of factors, such as application types, number of users, hardware type and number, power cost, personnel salaries, etc. the financial parameters listed are aimed to just reflect the potential of solution proposed demonstrating possible economic impact.

Consequently, introduction of solution offered by Open Technologies will allow the company to significantly cut IT infrastructure cost of ownership due to reduction of expenses of power supply, administration, data storage, technical support, reduction of DPC premises. Namely:

  • reduction of capital costs of DPC construction or update due to reduction of number and capacity of equipment sufficient to solve IT tasks;
  • reduction of scheduled downtime due to minimization of new service and application introduction terms;
  • higher availability of the business critical applications due to centralized control and data and application protection and customized availability increase solutions;
  • significant acceleration of IT return of investment.
